Patrick Williams – CNY THATCamp 2019 http://cny2019.thatcamp.org At Syracuse University, Friday, October 25 Tue, 05 Nov 2019 18:47:24 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.12 See you Friday! http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/2019/10/24/wednesday-update/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 08:54:38 +0000 http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/?p=214

I’m really excited for our event coming up on Friday. I just wanted to put in a final prompt/reminder about proposing sessions. As you can see, several of our co-campers have written up proposals that cover a wide variety of approaches and topics. We’d love to see a few more going in to the event so people have a chance to think about how they want to spend the day. As you can see, ideas can be a general discussion you’d like to engage in, or a hands on demonstration/workshop on a tool you’ve learned, or a more playful exploration of a game or technology. Both of our rooms have AV/presentation support.

We will also leave room for last-minute ideas for our newest registrants the morning of, but we’ll be moving quickly to assemble the schedule so as much information as we see in advance will speed that process along so we can get to learning together. In order to login and post to WordPress, go here: cny2019.thatcamp.org/wp-login.php You should be able to start a post from the dashboard.

Wifi information: Guests to Syracuse may use the AirOrangeGuest network to connect. We’ll have printed instructions for you Friday.

One last thing I forgot to mention is: feel free to recycle a nametag/lanyard from a previous conference!

It’s time to begin proposing sessions! http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/2019/10/04/its-time-to-begin-proposing-sessions/ Fri, 04 Oct 2019 20:26:10 +0000 http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/?p=179

Because THATCamp CNY 2019 is an unconference, planning the content of the conference falls to all of us.

You are invited to use the THATCamp 2019 site to propose sessions in the categories of Talk / Make / Teach / Play: In a Talk session proposal, you offer to lead a group discussion on a topic or question of interest to you. In a Make session proposal, you offer to lead a small group in a hands-on collaborative working session with the aim of producing a draft document or piece of software. In a Teach session, you offer to teach a skill, either a “hard” skill or a “soft” skill. In a Play session, anything goes — you suggest literally playing a game, or playing around as a group with one or more technologies, or just doing something fun or original.

The preliminary schedule for the day accounts for sessions of 45 minutes to an hour, but we can accommodate longer sessions if the topic warrants.

In order to post a proposal you need to register for the event (which is free).

More details about the proposal process can be found on the propose page. If you run into any problems, send THATCamp organizer Patrick Williams (jpwill03@syr.edu) an email for help.

Choose Your Own Adventures: Simple Tools for Interactive Digital Writing http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/2019/10/04/choose-your-own-adventures-simple-tools-for-interactive-digital-writing/ Fri, 04 Oct 2019 20:21:05 +0000 http://cny2019.thatcamp.org/?p=177

On this session, we will look at several examples of creative interactive (mostly-text-based) writing platforms. We will play a few examples, talk about applications, and explore the backend interfaces of tools like Tiny Choice & Twine, considering pedagogical and creative endeavors to undertake with each.

Participants will leave the session with the beginnings of a small, playable game written in Tiny Choice that can serve as a basis or model for future projects.
